Translating is a daily practice. So it should come as no surprise that his site specific installation work takes on this practice both literally and metaphorically. Created especially for Second Street Gallery, and in reaction to Ide’s first experience of this place, and our history, decipher, 2010, translates Charlottesville’s Jeffersonian legacy into a 21st century language of LED lights and looping audio. It also honors traditional forms and materials, and weaves the artist’s own history into the mix. You know she is alive and okay, but you want to hear her voice. I have often been in the similar situation since 2007. Only difference is the fact that I can’t stand by her, who lives far from me. breathe represents my feeling in the situation. No sound, but the light is slowly blinking, wishing forever. Ash, burnished lumber, CD player, felt, metal, naked 12v bulb, original circuit, speaker, speaker wire, telephone cable, and vinyl record. — sound info — sound source: noise from a vinyl record published on August 9th, 1945 sound edit: Takafumi Ide generate came through my personal memory of my grandmother. The subject for this project became the idea of sharing her life in the turbulent social conditions from 1910 to 2008. The vinyl was recorded in 1945; the end of WWII. Under the vinyl, there is a naked light bulb, activated by the endless noise. Ash is heaped up under the light, which gives a sense of death. Text by Takafumi Ide, June 2009

reverberate, 2007-2009 78″ x 100″ x 20″ Created during a residency at Sculpture Space, Utica, NY and funded in part by the Pollock-Krasner Foundation and New York State Council on the Arts. Approximately 70 seconds interval. 12V halogen light, 3-channel interval sound, CD players, custom electronics, metal, plexi, subwoofer speakers, water, wire. — sound info — sound source: artist’s video library in 2002 and 2005 reverberate is based on notions of how someone’s voice leaves ripples across the lives of others. The work was inspired by my personal memory of my grandmother who passed in 2008. Since then, her voice repeats in my head and touches my heart. To reflect this emotional event in my work, I looked to my video library to find my grandmother’s voice. I digitally emphasized her voice saying certain phrases, which touched me by cutting the mid to high frequencies. I use subwoofer speakers in order to create the physical movement of the speaker cone activated by the low frequency. This installation, disperse, was just happened during the residence program. I needed to dry sand for a sand blaster. It was around 11 p.m. in late November, and snow started to fall. I decided to spread and dry out the sand inside the studio space. Actually, I did this not only drying the sand, but also, I wanted to focus on one activity in order to forget the unpleasant situation I had at that time. First I roughly spread the sand with annoyance, and then I realized that I had to spread the sand evenly on the floor in order to dry fast. I redid it, but calmly this time. The installation was based on three board-covered windows in the gallery space, room#6. The idea for butterflies came to my mind when I attended an Open House at the Carriage House. I stayed in the space for a while. After spending some time in the space, I noticed that there were three large windows on the east side. I wondered about how people must look through these windows and optimistically imagine their future. At the same time, the impression from the board-covered windows was disturbing. The structures are suspended from the ceiling in a grid shape in the 10’ x 24’ space. Each structure has three main elements: a 3” speaker, a 12-volt light bulb, and a thin 3’ x 3’ square suspend parallel with the floor under the other parts. The speaker, suspends above the square between two wires by a narrow bamboo rod, is placed near the top of the structure at my ear level. Under the speaker there is a light bulb placed at my eye level when I sit down on the ground. The sound waves are electronically linked to the voltage of sixteen LEDs, powering them and creating shadow images and light patterns in response to the volume. I utilize the sound and LEDs in hopes of creating an intimate feeling, like whispers in candlelight. Sixteen LED light and speaker structures hang from the ceiling in a circular shape from a polygonal steel frame. The steel frame, seventeen angles and sides, is attached on the ceiling. . Life is fleeting; therefore, life is beautiful. This expression is based on one of the values in Japanese aesthetics: impermanence. The fragile and transitory qualities of impermanence are considered of exceptional beauty. This idea describes the central theme of my work: ephemeral human life and its beauty. During the last two years, my installations have focused on life experience derived from my personal experiences. For each exhibition, I select a single word that encompasses an experience I am dealing with at that time. I use this keyword to develop my ideas conceptually and visually. I use technology to amplify the experience of my work by using sound and light. Technological aspects are not a significant part of the audience’s encounter even though they are often my interest in making the work. Rather than solely a visual interaction, I am able to control the viewer’s experience at the level of multiple senses, triggering the viewer’s memory. I believe that light, sound, and smell are passageways to memory. My conceptual and aesthetic concerns are inspired by specific sites. By spending time in the allotted location, I envision activating the space. I transform my visualization from the space into my installation. The…

. Takafumi Ide is an interdisciplinary media artist specializing in installation with sound and light. He received his B.A. in graphic design from Tama Art University in Tokyo in 1989, and his M.F.A. in studio art from Stony Brook University, NY in 2007. He has worked for more than ten years as a graphic designer and an illustrator in Japan and now teaches at Stony Brook University as a lecturer, and Suffolk County Community College, NY as an adjunct instructor. He has received several honors, such as The Sculpture Space Fellowship and Residency (funded by both the Pollock-Krasner Foundation and the New York State Council on the Arts), the Strategic Opportunity Stipend Program Grant through the New York Foundation for the Arts, and most recently the Nomura Cultural Foundation’s Project Grant, and the Vermont Studio Center’s partial-grant and Residency. He has exhibited both nationally and internationally. More recent juried solo exhibitions include the Harnett Gallery at the University of Rochester, the Second Street Gallery in Charlottesville, VA and Wave Hill Sunroon Project in Bronx, NY.
