Merging traditional Japanese aesthetics with contemporary digital technologies, Takafumi Ide is a media artist whose practice spans expansive outdoor sculptures, nuanced works on paper, and experimental watercolors. He is currently based in New York.

At the core of his interdisciplinary practice is an inquiry into how beauty emerges through impermanence. Ide explores the quiet yet enduring strength residing within the fragility of human existence and the natural world. By thoughtfully integrating light, sound, and organic materials, he creates sensory environments that evoke memory and invite viewers to recognize the dignity inherent in transient forms of being.

Ide has received international recognition, including recurring selections for the Nakanojo Biennale (Gunma, Japan). He was awarded a residency fellowship at Sculpture Space (Utica, NY), supported by the Pollock-Krasner Foundation. His steel sculpture, threshold, has been on long-term public view at Stone Quarry Hill Art Park (Cazenovia, NY) since 2011, fostering an ongoing dialogue between the environment and the viewer. His work has been presented at venues such as Wave Hill, the ISE Cultural Foundation, and the New York Electroacoustic Music Festival, and has been featured in The New York Times and Sculpture Magazine.

Ide earned his B.A. from Tama Art University (Tokyo) and his M.F.A. from Stony Brook University (New York). For over fifteen years, he has served as an Instructional Support Technician and Lecturer in the Department of Art at Stony Brook University, where he bridges artistic vision and technical practice through teaching and academic leadership.
